Bentham published Not Paul But Jesus in 1823 under the pseudonym "Gamaliel Smith." The book has only been reprinted on one occasion: an undated edition apparently published privately by American lawyer John J. Crandall without publisher's details or place of publication. The Library of Congress catalog dates this reprint as 1917. Both editions of Not Paul, But Jesus are now quite rare.
This e-text is based on the Crandall reprint. Crandall claims in his introduction to have reorganised certain sections of the first edition in order to improve the readability of the text. However, his edition is marred by a number of typesetting errors, and he incorrectly states in his preface that Bentham published Not Paul But Jesus under the name of Conyers Middleton in 1825.
