Freethought Archives > Baron d'Holbach > Christianity Unveiled (1766)

Holbach clandestinely published Christianity Unveiled under the name of Nicholas Boulanger (1722-1759), an actual scholar who was then deceased. Although some sources give 1761 or 1765 as the year of publication, the most recent English translator, David M. Holohan, has concluded that the work could not have been published earlier than 1766.

Christianity Unveiled was first translated into English in 1795 by an American, William Martin Johnson (1771?-1797), of whom little appears to be known. This online version is based on the British edition of Johnson's translation, published in 1819 by Richard Carlile.
